The
Braves first 2009 League Game vs the Athletics was played on
Friday, April 10th, with the Athletics winning 11-9
in five innings.
1ST
INNING
The A's put four runs on the scoreboard in the top of the
first inning to take a 4-0 lead, with their first four batters
reaching base and scoring runs. A groundout to Paul at
first base, and a strikeout followed the scoring burst by the
A's hitters. Their #7 batter reached base on a hit and
promptly stole second base, but was left there as the next
batter struck out to end the inning.
The
Braves did not score in the bottom of the first, as two
strikeouts and a groundout to the pitcher were sandwiched
around Jamison's base hit and left him stranded at first base.
2ND
INNING
The A's were held scoreless in the top of the second inning,
with their batters striking out 1-2-3.
However,
the Braves again failed to score in their half of the second
inning as Trey popped out to the catcher and the next two
batters went down on strikes.
3RD
INNING
The Athletics managed to score six runs in the
top of the third with seven of their first eight batters
hitting safely. a strikeout by their third batter and
back-to-back strikeouts at the end completed their half of the
frame, but the A's had increased their lead to 10-0, while
leaving a runner at first base.
The
Braves came up empty on runs scored for the third consecutive
inning. After a leadoff strikeout, Joshua managed a base
hit but could not advance further as a strikeout and a popup
to the shortstop ended the inning with Joshua stuck at second
base.
4TH
INNING
The A's again failed to
put a run across in the top of the fourth inning. This
time the Braves defense put them down with their leadoff
hitter grounding out to the pitcher to begin the frame.
A base hit followed, but then Hayden caught two pop-ups to the
catcher from the next tow batters to end the A's fourth inning
at bat and leave the runner stranded at first base.
The
Braves finally broke through with two runs in the bottom of
the fourth inning. Paul lead off with a groundout to the
first baseman but Jamison followed with a base hit and scored
after Hayden grounded out to the pitcher and Trey reached on a
base hit, driving in the run. Trey then advanced to
third where he was able to score due to A's fielding
lapses. Jacob grounded out to the pitcher to end the
inning, leaving the bases empty. 5TH
INNING
The A's added one final
run in the top of the fifth inning to increase the lead to
11-2 as their first four batters reached base on hits.
The bases were left loaded, though as the next two batters
struck out and the last batter grounded out to the pitcher.
The
Braves went on a tear in the bottom of the fifth, scoring the
maximum number of runs permitted in an inning by putting seven
more runs on the board. Caleb lead off with a base hit
and stole second. After a strikeout, Joshua singled and
then Tanner drove Caleb in with a base hit. Kalyb then
singled, but was later erased trying to score (5-2).
Paul, Jamison, Hayden, and Trey all singled and scored, with
Hayden picking up an RBI in the process. Jacob then
drove in the seventh and final run with his base hit, allowing
Trey to score. Unfortunately, it was a case of
"too little too late" as time had expired and the
A's held on for an 11-9 win, although this was by far the most
exciting game that the Braves had played to date
