The
Braves team played the Diamondbacks on the afternoon of April
5th in their final pre-season tournament pool game,
defeating the D'Backs by 9-7 in five innings.
1ST
INNING
The Diamondbacks failed to score in the top of the first
inning, despite three base hits. The Braves defense was
busy as the D'Backs were forced out on the bases, once after
attempting to stretch a base hit and then on a fielder's
choice. The leadoff batter reached on a hit but was
tagged out on a 5-3-4-5 play as Kalyb, Hayden and Jamison
teamed up to catch the runner before he could reach second
safely. Then, the next batter also reached base on a
single, only to be erased on a 6-5-4 fielder's choice as Trey,
Kalyb, and Jamison were able to get the out. The D'Backs
fourth batter singled before the #5 hitter struck out to leave
runners at first and second.
The
Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the inning as
the team sent eight batters to the plate. Kalyb and Paul
led off the inning with back-to-back singles and then came
around to score after Hayden singled and Jamison picked up an
RBI on a groundout to the pitcher. Hayden then scored as
Jacob and Trey reached base with singles, and Jacob managed to
score the fourth run before the inning ended with a strikeout.
2ND
INNING
The Diamondbacks' second inning proved productive as they
scored three runs on four hits. The #6 batter led off
with a single, followed by two more base hits, with all three
runners eventually scoring. A pair of strikeouts and
then another base hit as the D'Backs leadoff hitter drove in
the third run. The final out was on a fielder's choice
by the #2 batter, forcing the previous batter, Kalyb made an
unassisted put out at third
base.
The
Braves failed to get on base in their half of the second
inning, going down 1-2-3 with two strikeouts and a groundout,
but still maintained the lead at 4-3.
3RD
INNING
The Diamondbacks picked up another run in
the top of the third inning to tie the game at 4-4. The
#3 batter, leading off the inning singled and advanced on a
groundout to the pitcher as Ryley connected with Hayden for
the out at first. Two more base hits followed, driving
in the run before strikeouts ended the
inning.
The
Braves regained the lead with three runs in the third inning
to make the score 7-4 at that point. Kalyb and Paul
again lead off with consecutive singles and scored, after a
strikeout, on a hit by Hayden and a groundout to the
pitcher. One more strikeout closed the Braves' half of
the third.
4TH
INNING
The Diamondbacks did not
score in the fourth inning although one runner reached base,
only to be caught stealing at second base on a throw from Paul
to Hayden for the putout.
The
Braves added a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth to
increase their lead to 9-4. Trey led off with the team's
first home run of the season, followed by a hit by Caleb, who
also stole second and third base before being driven in by
Joshua's groundout to the pitcher. A strikeout also
ended the fourth inning.
5TH
INNING
The Diamondbacks came back
with three runs of their own in the fifth inning but fell
short as the Braves held on to win the game by a score of 9-7.
Despite getting their first six batters on base to start the
fifth inning, two strikeouts and a groundout to Kalyb at third
base ended the threat. Time
had expired during the Diamondbacks half of the inning and the
game was called as soon as the third out was made, to earn the
win for the Braves - their first in 2009.
