The
2009 Braves team met the Yankees on April 4th at 3:00 PM
for their first pre-season tournament contest, with the
Yankees taking the game by a score of 10-4 in five
innings.
1ST
INNING
The Braves went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning as
the Yankee defense proved to be up to the challenge and our
team's first three hitters grounded out to the infield twice
and struck out.
In the Yankee half of the first
inning, the Yankees gained a run on three hits as their
leadoff hitter singled and stole his way to third base.
After a strikeout, the #3 hitter singled the run home but was
later out on a fielder's choice as Jamison fielded a ground
ball and tagged him out on his way to second base. The
#4 hitter, who hit into the fielders choice, advanced to
second base and then, after a single by the #5 batter,
was himself erased as the #6 batter grounded into a fielder's
choice, and Kalyb tagged the bag at third for the force out to
end the inning
2ND
INNING .
The second inning started well with both Jamison and Jacob
reaching base, but could go no further than second base before
the Yankees defense again closed the door on the Braves
offense. A ground ball out ended the inning,
leaving runners at first and second base.
The Yankees put another run
across in their half of the second inning after a strikeout, a
fly out to Trey at shortstop, a single (two stolen bases), a
base hit, and a strikeout.
3RD
INNING
The Braves broke through in the third inning
scoring three runs on base hits by Easton, Joshua , and Paul
to take a 3-2 lead. Paul picked up two RBIs, driving in
Easton and Joshua, then stole second and third and scored on a
Yankee miscue to cap the inning. A strikeout with the
bases empty closed out the Braves half of the third inning.
The Braves' lead proved
temporary, however as the Yankees bounced back in the bottom
of the third with four runs of their own. The Yankees
#11 hitter reached safely and came around to score after two
ground ball outs. The leadoff hitter grounded to second
and Jamison connected with Hayden at first to get the
out. The #2 hitter drove a ball into left field but was
out trying to advance to second as Joshua threw to Jamison for
the out. Two more runs scored as the #3 batter singled then
scored on a home run by Zach, the Yankees cleanup
batter. The next two Yankees reached base safely and one
more run scored before a strikeout left a runner stranded at
second base. The Yankees lead increased to 6-3.
4TH
INNING
In the fourth inning the Braves picked up two
more hits but failed to score. Hayden led off the inning with
a ground out to the first baseman, followed by base hits by
Jamison and Jacob. Trey hit into a fielder's choice as
the Yankee shortstop tagged Jamison for the force out between
second and third base. A strikeout ended the inning with
runners at first and second.
The Yankees picked up another
run in their half of the fourth inning to increase their lead
to 7-3, sending seven batters to the plate but leaving the
bases loaded after a groundout to Hayden, a popup to Jamison,
and a strikeout.
5TH
INNING
The Braves put their final run on the scoreboard
in the fifth inning, cutting the score to 7-4, as Joshua
reached on a base hit, advanced to second on Tanner's
groundout, and scored as Kalyb and Paul each reached base
safely with consecutive base hits. A strikeout ended the
inning, however, stranding runners at second and third
base.
The Yankees scored their final
three runs to make the score 10-4 in the bottom of the fifth
inning. Seven more Yankees batters came to bat with four
hits combined with three strikeouts to produce the runs.
The game was called at the end of the fifth inning because the time limit had expired.
